GDPR What you need to know by Michael Cheary More and more companies now rely on data to move their businesses forwardâ¦As a result, new legislation is being introduced in 2018 which will help regulate the way all businesses manage their data â" replacing the current Data Protection Act.To find out more, we spoke to the experts at the IDM to find out more about GDPR, and how it could even help you find a brand new role:What is GDPR?The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new law that applies to any company that holds data on European citizens. The law effectively changes how companies manage data, and will apply to any company regardless of where they are based.Sectors most likely to be affected include retail, marketing and marketing services, but many other sectors will be also be affected.When does the GDPR come into effect?The GDPR officially comes into effect on 25th May 2018.Although itâs an EU legislation, the government have stated that it will be enforced even if Brexit goes ahe ad, meaning businesses need to get-to-grips with it now in order to prepare for the change.What data does the GDPR cover? Data classified as âpersonal dataâ or âsensitive personal dataâ will be covered by the GDPR.Examples of data that fall under these categories include everything from telephone numbers and personal addresses, through to online data such as IP addresses, emails and even medical or HR records.What is the Data Protection Act?The Data Protection Act (DPA) was the previous legislation put in place to protect peopleâs personal data â" and is being formally replaced by GDPR.The main differences between GDPR and the DPA are that itâs a lot stricter, ensuring businesses can only collect personal data for valid reasons â" and must delete it once itâs no longer needed.GDPR also ensures that only those who need the data can access it. Thatâs where a Data Protection Officer comes in.What is a Data Protection Officer?Businesses need Data Protection Officers (D POs) to manage the move to the GDPR, and also keep on top of the GDPR once it is introduced in May 2018.Three types of company need a Data Protection Officer:Public authoritiesCompanies that, âcarry out large scale systematic monitoring of individualsâCompanies that, âcarry out large scale processing of special categories of data or data relating to criminal convictions and offencesâRealistically, any business of significant size will need a Data Protection Officer, particularly any business with a marketing or customer service department.Why is Data Protection important?There are severe penalties for those businesses that donât comply with the GDPR totalling up to â¬20 million or 4% of global turnover (whichever is the higher).These stiff penalties are in order to make sure large multinationals and internet giants take notice of the new laws. It means that in practice, many large companies throughout the world will make changes to meet the requirements of the GDPR, even if they are not based in Europe.As a result, Data Protection Officers are in high-demand, with median salaries already exceeding £50,000. Take The Long Way Home â" Hereâs Why - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career If you always do what youâve always done, youâre probably going to get what youâve always gotten. Job seekers and other people with vision or ambition canât afford to waste a moment of their travels. Even the ordinary commute can be changed-up to increase the potential for a positively life-changing connection. Two little rules: Take out your ear buds and make eye contact. And, one biggie: practice a ready hello and a simple greeting that telegraphs you are friendly. Mine is: âHello and how is your day going?â Thatâs my personal take on my number one most recommended trigger talk for people who want to expand their network. If youâre not familiar with my communication system, I help people develop lots of simple, easy to remember bits of conversation so the toughest things in life are on automatic. Like meeting new people. Trigger talk is something you choose to say thatâs natural for you. In this instance, itâs a simple question thatâs all loaded up in my brainâs âLook: a new person!â file. Thatâs what I mean about a phrase being âon a trigger.â The sight of a new person triggers my brain to do a specific sequence, no decisions (hence no hesitation). When I see a new person, I have an overpowering, reflexive mechanism that opens my mouth, makes my eyes smile, and pops these words out of my mouth: âHello and how is your day going?â Trigger talk can get a lot more complicated. In presentations, you may have whole portions of product knowledge or success stories on trigger. But, this greeting is the fundamental building block of communication. It works to increase your network. Itâs not amazing, difficult or otherwise expert-level communication. I thought a lot about the power of my greeting, and what I want people to know about me right away. With my greeting, Iâm telegraphing a little kindness, a little curiosity and a little openness (all parts of my personal brand). Once you like your greeting, practice it by saying it aloud; imagining the everyday situations where you find yourself with strangers. The grocery store. The train. The walk with your dog. A new lunch place. You get the idea. Your greeting is like your business card; it should reflect your brand. Go where you have not been before. Greet. Iâve had all kinds of people answer me. Some famous, some less famous and some went on to become my clients, employers, employees, investors, partners, vendors and friends. Itâs always enlightening when they respond with some specific details about their day. At that moment, my job is to just listen. My brain is trained to check its file cabinets to see if Iâve got anything stored that connects with what theyre saying. Sometimes, I donât. So my follow-up trigger talk pops out, typically one of three choices. âWow, thatâs a lot.â âWow, Iâm glad to hear it.â Or âWow, Iâm sorry itâs not a great day.â That wow gives my brain time to process what Ive heard, so the right thing comes out of my mouth. About 20% of the time, I hear something that sounds like a good tidbit that a colleague, client or my company might want to interact on. Iâve heard: âI just made my first big sale!â âThis commute is killing me. Iâm thinking of getting a helicopter.â âI need to spend less time eating and more time getting back into shape.â Thatâs three potential leads for three different business people I know. A wow plus one or two more sentences: and we exchange contact information. How can you implement this today? If you normally take the 8:15 train, take the 7:50. If you work at home, pick another destination for your travels. Walk to the far end of the biggest park, or traverse 10 big city blocks and get on a bus to make it back home. Get your bagel at a different stand. No matter what else is going right or wrong in your life and career: know this. Everyday you have the opportunity to say the one thing that can change your life. You can always create the opportunity to meet someone new. Do it five times a day, and my odds say youâll have one new contact worth pursuing, profiting from or perhaps referring and (earning good deeds points). Take the long cut.

But the fact is they encounter as many obstacles and roadblocks as anyone else. So how do they keep ahead of the pack and constantly get pay raises, promotions, and the best opportunities? Because they are what I call career smart. They make choices, decisions, and take risks every day with the purpose of advancing their career. Being career smart is NOT about accepting whatever job is handed to you, but instead its about finding opportunities inside that job, or elsewhere, that allow you to create a career that inspires you. Below are three strategies to help you be career smart and achieve a career that fills you with purpose, meaning, and passion! 1. Get into a career where you can thrive (not just survive!) Its impossible to thrive in a career if youre just going through the motions at work. If youre walking around dull and listless (like the Clairol Herbal Essence girl before she shampoos her hair), then others are sure to see you that way. You need to be in a career that challenges you, flexes your professional muscles, and excites you! Think about what kind of work you WANT to be doing. Identify three key ingredients you need in your career to be happy and fulfilled such as leading teams, working on creative projects, developing new technologies, etc. Once youve defined the three key ingredients, then do whatever it takes to drive your career towards that vision. 2. Send the right messages. Everything you do and say sends messages to your senior managers, clients, networking contacts and potential employers. Your words, actions, presentations, status reports, resume, and interview responses all shape the perceptions others have about you. Send a crystal clear message that focuses on the value that you consistently deliver to a company or client. Your value is a unique blend of your strengths, professional accomplishments, and personal characteristics such as being a good leader, risk taker, problem solver, strategic thinker, etc. All of these things combined make up your value package which makes you truly unique from a crowd of colleagues, business associates, and even job applicants. The key is to role model the value that you provide by consistently demonstrating it, living it and breathing it. 3. Be open to possibilities. I love the funny saying, If you want to make God laugh tell him your plans. ?? One of the biggest mistakes I ALMOST made was declining the privilege of serving on the American Marketing Associations National Council. I naively was only looking at it as another volunteer opportunity that cut into my professional and personal life. Fortunately, a mentor helped me see the bigger picture which was a tremendous gift that could strengthen my leadership skills, deepen my marketing expertise, broaden my professional network, and advance my career ten fold. (After accepting the position and serving just one year, I was named President of the AMAs National Council which advanced my career up to a completely new level.) Be assertive, and aggressively seek out new career opportunities. Give serious consideration to each and every possibility that comes your way. Never decline an opportunity without getting a fresh perspective from people in your circle whom you respect. Whether youre considering a new job, or a new assignment in your current organization, answer the questions, What could be the best possible benefit? Could this help me learn a new skill or strengthen a current skill? Could this be a stepping stone to help me achieve my ultimate career goal? Successful professionals arent lucky. They are career smart. They make choices, decisions, and take risks every day with the purpose of advancing their career. So step up, branch out, and start being receptive to new possibilities. There are always opportunities around you. You just have to go after them! Your Assignment Become career smart! Determine what kind of career you WANT. Identify three key ingredients you need in your career to be happy and fulfilled such as leading teams, working on creative projects, developing new technologies, etc. Then, start talking to managers, mentors, clients, and potential employers about the kind of responsibilities that you want. By talking about the career you want, youll be much more likely to achieve it! Finally, be receptive to new opportunities. Whether its an opportunity for a new job, a new assignment, or even a volunteer position, ask yourself, What could be the best possible benefit? Could this help me learn a new skill or strengthen a current skill? Could this be a stepping stone to help me achieve my ultimate career goal?
